How to Publish a Children’s Book in India: A Step-by-Step Guide
Writing a story for children is one of the most rewarding things an author can do. But once the story is written, many first-time authors in India ask the same question: how do I actually turn this into a real book that children can hold? This guide walks you through every step.
1. Know your reader
Children’s books are written for very specific ages. Before you edit your story, decide who it is for:
- Board books (ages 0–3): very few words, simple concepts, sturdy pages.
- Picture books (ages 3–8): a short story told through words and pictures together, often 24–32 pages.
- Early readers (ages 5–8): simple sentences that children can read on their own.
- Chapter books and middle grade (ages 7–12): longer stories with fewer illustrations.
Your reader’s age decides your word count, page count, illustrations and even the price of your book.
2. Polish your manuscript
Read your story aloud. Children’s books are usually read aloud by parents and teachers, so rhythm matters. Cut words the pictures can show instead. A professional editor who understands children’s books can help with storyline, pacing and age-appropriate language.
3. Plan the illustrations
In a picture book, illustrations tell half the story. Create a simple storyboard: divide your text into pages and note what each picture should show. Then choose an illustration style that suits your story, whether that is bright cartoons, soft watercolours or bold digital art. At Books Mantra our illustrators design your characters, storyboard and pages for you.
4. Get an ISBN and protect your work
An ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is the unique identifier that lets bookshops and online stores list your book. In India, ISBNs are issued by the Raja Rammohun Roy National Agency for ISBN. A publisher like Books Mantra arranges this for you, and every one of our plans includes an ISBN. You can also register copyright for your content.
5. Design the book
Interior layout and cover design make a huge difference to sales. Use readable fonts, leave room for illustrations to breathe, and make sure your cover looks good as a small thumbnail on Amazon, because that is where most parents will first see it.
6. Choose how to print
- Print on demand (POD): books are printed when someone orders them. No upfront stock and no wasted copies.
- Bulk or offset printing: printing hundreds of copies at once lowers the cost per book, which is useful for school orders, events and book fairs.
7. Distribute your book
List your book on Amazon.in, Flipkart and Kindle, and on specialist stores for children’s books like Ziffy Bees. Wider plans can add Amazon.com, Google Books and Ingram for international readers.
8. Market your book
Even a wonderful book needs readers to find it. Plan a launch with social media posts, reels, book reviews, Amazon advertising and school or apartment book fairs. Read our guide to marketing a children’s book in India for more ideas.
